Abstract
Objective : It is important to cope stress properly, which may influence on the course of bipolar disorder. This study aimed to examine coping strategies in bipolar patients compared to those in controls, and to explore the relationship between anxiety and coping strategies.

Methods : Forty patients who met DSM-IV-TR criteria for bipolar disorder and forty controls who were matched by age and sex were included. Coping strategies were measured by Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), and the level of anxiety were also measured by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Independent t-test was used to compare coping strategies between the two groups, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to adjust the influence of anxiety.

Results : Emotion-focused coping strategy was significantly higher in bipolar patients than controls. State and trait anxiety were positively correlated with emotion-focused coping strategy in both bipolar patients and controls. There was no significant difference of coping strategies between the two groups after adjusting trait anxiety.

Conclusion : This study results suggested that bipolar patients have a tendency to use emotion-focused coping strategy, which can be influenced by the level of anxiety. Large-scale study might be needed to confirm the findings of this study.
